Raymond A. Hughes, 72, of Millsboro, Del., formerly of Malvern, Pa., passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes, Del. He was born Sept. 26, 1944, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., a son of the late Carroll Hughes and Helen Davis Hughes.

Hughes worked for Hank’s Speed Shop in Berwyn, Pa., before opening his own shop, called Ray’s Automotive, in Paoli, Pa., before retiring from Champion Auto Rental. After Hughes’ retirement and move to Long Neck, Del., he had his own lawn-mowing business and worked for Baywood Greens.

Hughes was an avid golfer and enjoyed working on and repairing golf carts. While living in the Malvern area, he was an active member of the Paoli Fire Company, along with his two brothers.

In addition to his parents, Hughes was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Hughes. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, JoAnne L. (Pierson) Hughes; two children, Debbie Swope of Birchrunville, Pa., and Michael Hughes and his wife, Doria, of Chester Springs, Pa.; five grandchildren, Ashley Federsel, McKenzie Garrison, Chase Garrison, Michael Hughes Jr. and Hunter Hughes; a great-granddaughter, Mia Federsel; and a brother, Leslie Hughes, and his wife, Betty, of Long Neck, Del.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017, at 3 p.m. at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, Del., where friends may gather at 2 p.m. Interment will be private. Condolences may be sent online at www.melsonfuneralservices.com.
