Ocean View hears review prospects
Ocean View Town Council applauded departing Planning and Zoning (P&Z) Commission Member Jeanne Mueller at the top of the June 7 council meeting, and sailed unruffled through another hour and a half of business. Things wrapped up on a lively note, though, with comments on a potentially faulty town budget structure from Cliff Mitchell, and an offer of big revenues from Bob Thornton (both town residents).

Parents offer support for behavior mod
Three local parents — Cathy Berzins, Rebecca Mais and Patrice Pikulsky — recently formed up as the Safety in Our Schools (SOS) committee, with the goal of supporting the Indian River School District’s (IRSD’s) threatened behavior modification positions.

Manufactured housing sector faces council
Sussex County Council members spent most of the afternoon presiding over the public hearing for a proposed 1,600-unit residential plus commercial development on 836 acres of farmland between Milford and Milton. (They deferred, awaiting a recommendation from the Planning and Zoning (P&Z) commission.)

Fenwick drafts 1.43 million budget
Fenwick Island Town Council and Budget Committee members met Tuesday, June 7, to make final tweaks to the town’s budget for the 2006 fiscal year. The final draft budget is scheduled to be presented to the town at the council’s June 24 meeting, in anticipation of the end of the 2005 fiscal year in July.

Teacher of the Year defines passion for stage
And the winner is — James DeBastiani. The Indian River School District (IRSD) makes the tough call every year — which of 14 candidates (one from each school) will be crowned Teacher of the Year for the entire district.

Post Office to discuss expansion
U.S. Postal Service officials will hold a public forum on Thursday, June 16, to discuss the planning of a new, expanded Ocean View-Millville-Clarksville post office. The meeting will be at the Millville firehouse and start at 6:30 p.m.

Selbyville closer to water expansion
Selbyville officials are eager to begin the process of expanding the town’s water service area.

The trolley rides
The new, larger Bethany Beach trolley arrived last Thursday smelling of freshly sanded oak. The interior sparkled with untarnished brass handrails and the exterior gleamed with a pristine coat of paint.

Brittingham leaves her mark on school
Headmaster Sharon Brittingham has spearheaded the transformation of Frankford Elementary from an underperforming institution into an academic exemplarity. On June 30 she will head out for good.

Frankford Town Council talks interconnection
Frankford Town Council moved one step closer to a cooperative agreement with the town of Dagsboro at the June 6 council meeting, following a discussion on emergency water interconnection.

South Bethany talks beaches and buildings
South Bethany Town Council met twice last week, for various workshops, special meetings and reorganization. Lloyd Hughes maintained attendance through what would be his last meeting as a member of council on June 2 (he declined to file for reelection this year). However, his tidal flush project (pipes under Route 1 refreshes town canals with seawater) is still alive

BFACC members welcome secretary of state to breakfast
The Hon. Harriet Smith Windsor stopped by Warren’s Station in Fenwick Island on June 2, for breakfast and an informal chat regarding her duties as Delaware Secretary of State.

DNREC proposes easy lagoon permits
The Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) unveiled a plan for expedited construction approval in manmade lagoons and canals at a June 1 workshop in Bethany Beach.

Ed Chiasson’s place on Route 54 is just beautiful — drunk drivers have smashed into his hedgerow a time or two, but other than that, it’s green and quiet, with extensive landscaping and flower garden.

Through all the changes in the area, B & R Tackle and Hunting Supplies has been a staple in the York Beach Mall for 29 years.

Not to sound like a broken record, but just like last week, fishing is pretty good all over.

Like all the business people in the area, Brian Trout is preparing for the busy season. Trout is the head pro at Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club and has been on the job a little more than two months.

Book shines light on landmarks
Bob Trapani Jr., the executive director of the American Lighthouse Foundation and former resident of Lewes, had a book released recently, called “Lighthouses of New Jersey and Delaware — History, Mystery, Legends & Lore,” containing pictures of lighthouses from Sandy Hook, N.J., to Fenwick Island, and also the Delaware Bay.
