Fishing report

Tom from Cedar Creek Tackle has reported there are lots of throw-back flounder, some bluefish and small trout being caught around the Anchorage and Brown Shoal. A few nice keeper flounder have been caught near the Red Can off the Mohawk. Along the shore, off Slaughter Beach, they are catching some fair-size trout and bluefish.

Rick from Rick’s Bait reported mostly small (not legal-size) flounder being caught in the Indian River Bay, along with some fair-size bluefish and under-size stripers. Some of the better areas to fish are around Buoys 12, 14 and the Slough, near South Shore Marina.

Bobby Roberts from Easton, Md., fishing with his friend Ray, caught two keeper flounder — 3 pounds, 2 ounces, and 4 pounds — on shiners while fishing near South Shore Marina and the VFW. Rich and Anne Gee from Thurmont, Md., fishing near the Coast Guard station, caught several throw-back flounder, but Anne managed to boat two flounder measuring 18 and 21 inches, respectively. Captain Rich explained he just drives the boat. Anne catches all the fish.

Joe Morris from Lewes Harbor Marina said there have been some good catches of croakers outside of the Outer Wall down to Buoys 4 and 6. He added that some of these fish are up to 2.5 pounds. Keeper flounder have slowed, with no citation fish weighed in this week.

Fishing from Indian River Inlet and the Sea Wall and jetties have produced some fair catches of bluefish and small stripers, along with seabass and croakers. The larger stripers (larger than 28 inches) are still being caught, mostly at night, with live eels, spot, plugs and storm lures.

Vicki of Hook, Line and Sinker at Cape Henlopen Pier, reported lots of spot, some croakers, flounder, trout and small bluefish being caught during the day and night. Bill Smith from Lewes caught more than 34 spot and several bluefish while fishing on the pier.

Our local headboats, out of Indian River and Lewes, reported catches of seabass and croakers, with some bluefish mixed in. West of B buoy and up in the Lower Anchorage seem to be their favorite spots.

Off shore fishing has been a mixed bag this week, with some good and not-so-good catches of tuna, dolphin, wahoo and white marlin.

Captain Steve Peterson on the Pandemonium out of Indian River, with anglers Gene Keeney, Dick Warner and three others from Harrisburg, Pa., caught 15 yellowfin tuna, each weighing up to 66 pounds, while chunking on the edge of the Baltimore Canyon. The tuna bites overall seem to be spread out, with some catches to the north, some south and some inshore.

Normally, I don’t report on the fishing in the Ocean City bay. However, the following catches deserve a special report: Jere Putt from Lebanon, Pa, fishing in the Ocean City Inlet area with live spot, caught two flounder, at 7 pounds, 13 ounces, and 4 pounds, 6 ounces. Nice fish! Randy Czyzewski and his son Matt, from South Bethany, caught flounder at 5 pounds, 4 ounces, and 3 pounds, 14 ounces, on live minnows, while fishing just south of the Route 50 Bridge.

Surf fishing along the Delaware coast is producing good catches of kingfish, some trout after dark, and a few bluefish, now that the mullet have begun to show up. The best bait appears to be bloodworms and Fish Bites.

Until next week: Take a kid fishing.
