On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the 3-2 Lady Indians volleyball team hosted the 1-4 Lady Senators of Dover in what would turn out to be Indian River’s third loss of the season, with a score of 3-1.

Shauna Jacobs of Indian River said, “We had a good chance at winning and we felt confident, but we had some little errors in our heads and caused us to slack more.

The Lady Indians fell behind early in Game 1 to the Lady Senators, only to rally 8-10. Being only two points behind for most of the match, Indian River was eventually able to advance and put themselves in the lead, with Hayley Brennan scoring a point off of Sarah Elberly of Dover.

From there, the Lady Indians kept the lead, to pull away to a 25-21 win with Kelly Jurusik setting up Jacobs, who then set up Renee Davidson for the kill.

After the fist win for Indian River, it was all downhill.

The Lady Indians started the second match on fire when Jurusik and Jacobs went up for a block and put the match at 2-1. Following that block, three more blocks would become three more points for Indian River and that put them ahead 7-5.

It wasn’t until that point that Dover began to pick up their game and take back the lead with the score at 7-11. As much as Indian River tried to keep in it with the Lady Senators, they just pulled further away as Dover was able to take the match at 25-17.

In the third match, like the second, Indian River was on fire at the start, jumping ahead to an early 9-4 lead. But the Lady Senators cut that lead short when Dover was able to tie it at 13-13, and end it at 25-17 again.

The final match between the two teams was all Dover again. Indian River rallied first, but lost it when the Lady Indians tied it with a kill from Sherona Kerr followed by another kill by Kerr to rally again at 3-1. The Lady Indians were outplayed when the match came to an end with a score of 25-14.

“We need to take it one game at a time. We had too many errors,” said Coach Jesse Dodd.

Jurusik had 10 kills. Sara Powell had five aces, seven kills and 10 digs. Jacobs recorded four aces, 24 assists and three digs, followed by Davidson with eight kills and four digs.

The Lady Indians were set to play away at 2-4 Red Lion Christian Academy on Sept. 28, where Indian River was looking forward to advancing their record to 4-3.

“Red Lion is a tough team. If we pick up our attitude, play strong and limit stupid mistakes; we can win,” said Jurusik.

On Sept. 22, Indian River faced up against Caravel but lost 3-0 with scores of: 25-14; 25-10 and 25-13.

Sara Powell had five kills and 11 digs, and Hilary Hawkins came up with three kills and two digs. Hayley Brennan had three aces, two kills and four digs, followed by Shauna Jacobs with two kills, seven assists and six digs. Nyssa Altman recorded five digs.
