Shutout keeps Indians undefeated

When Sussex Central traveled to Indian River on Sept. 27, a familiar school rivalry heated up. The Indians, coming into the game, had a perfect record of 4-0 and looked to advance that record on the 1-1 Golden Knights.
“Last year, the game went into double overtime and we were confident we could win,” said Ben Gichner.
For Indian River, it was a semi-easy night with three of their five goals coming in the first half.
“Being up 3-0 at the halfway point of the game, you have to put it away and finish with the win,” Coach Howard Gerkin said.
The first goal of the night was recorded and scored by Morgan Hunt with an assist from Peter Mais, about eight minutes into the game.
The second goal came off of Hunt yet again, but that time to the right corner of the net. The goal was set up by Cameron Travalini 14 minutes into the first half.
A pass from Pierson Roenke to Gichner set up what would be the third and final goal of the first half, with 19 minutes played.
In the start of the second half, the Golden Knights still showed no hope as Mais was able to get the ball to Roenke with 50 minutes and 30 seconds into the game, to score another Indian River goal. It put the game at 4-0 for the Indians and the Knights were not looking to have a chance.
About six minutes following the fourth goal of the night for Indian River, Ben Gichner was able to get his second personal goal of the night and put the game away for Sussex Central at 5-0.
Gerkin said of the game, “The defense came through and finished strong.”
The Indians advanced their record to 6-0 as the Golden Knights fell to a record of 1-2 against their intra-district rivals.
Indian River had 17 shots on goal along with three corner kicks. Goalie Sean Lewis had nine saves.
The Indians were set to travel to Delmar and take on the 1-1-1 Wildcats on Sept. 29, at 7 p.m., in another division game in the Southern Henlopen Conference.
“I feel we are prepared and confident to get the job done again against Delmar,” said Gichner.
“On paper it says we are stronger. But we don’t win on paper, we win on the field. We have to come ready to play,” said Gerkin.
On Sept. 22, Indian River played Sussex Tech in a game that came down to only one goal. Morgan Hunt scored the goal for Indian River on a semi-bicycle kick about 30 seconds into the first half.
The Indians had 23 shots on goal along with eight corner kicks and four saves by Lewis.
