South Bethany enacts parking changes
After months of revisions, South Bethany’s new parking ordinance was voted into place May 12, on a 6-0 vote of the council (Councilwoman Marge Gassinger absent). Last-minute tweaking to wording covering mopeds, motorcycles and other such vehicles under the umbrella term “motorized conveyance” completed the work, which sets requirements for all such vehicles to display a parking permit and allows the council to set fees by resolution.

Open doors
Just inside the door of the Chalkboard Tavern and Grille sits what else? A chalkboard, of course. In addition to the extensive menu offered by the new Bethany Beach restaurant and bar, that chalkboard offers a list of its specials daily. Usually, two entrees and one appetizer are extras on the menu, which has been well received by local residents since the Chalkboard’s grand opening on St. Patrick’s Day weekend, said owner Ken Heaps.

Bethany Beach resident John Scordo remembers growing up in Baltimore city in a hot-rod era. He remembers walking the streets of Baltimore, being in awe of the 1949 Mercurys, and the old Hudsons, just to name a couple models.

Indians take down Caravel on the diamond
Indian River’s head baseball coach Howard Smack looked like a kid on Christmas morning following the team’s 5-2 win over No.3-ranked Caravel on May 15. He couldn’t contain his smile. But why should he? His team had won their last six games and recently won the Southern Division title, heading into its regular-season finale against Sussex Central on May 17.
Girls close soccer season with eight straight
The Indian River girls soccer team (13-3 overall) owned the Henlopen Conference this season, only two conference losses, to Caesar Rodney and Delmar. And the team just recently stamped its mark on two upstate teams, to conclude the regular season with eight straight wins.
Indian River wins consecutive Southern Division titles
Indian River’s golf team killed four birds with one stone on May 15, to win consecutive Southern Division championships and set a school record for wins (13) by beating Seaford and Southern contender Smyrna in a dual match at Cripple Creek Golf and Country Club.
Clash of the titans
Indian River’s 17-2 softball team hosted Caravel (16-2) on May 15 in a clash of the titans and what could very well be a preview for the state championship. But with so much talent on the field somebody still had to lose. Caravel defeated Indian River 7-1, but the game was much closer than the score indicated.
SMS sweeps season series
Winning 45 games and losing only one over a four-year period leaves fans thinking: dynasty. That a team could top such a fantastic accomplishment is beyond belief to most, but Selbyville Middle School’s baseball team did just that by notching its 46th win in a 3-1 win over long-time rival Sussex Central Middle School.
Tiffany pleased with tennis team
Of all of Indian River’s tennis teams, only the freshman second-doubles team of Taylor Rosenblit and Julia Jaquette advanced to the second round of the conference tournament at Sea Colony on May 12. But the team saw so much competition in singles matches and, having to go without Kara Roach of the first-doubles team due to business conference, head coach Elizabeth Tiffany ruled it a success.
