'Kid-friendly'

There are plenty of ‘rainy day’ treats for kids at Fenwick Hammocks & Kites.

There are a few constants in this community. Coastal real estate is a strong local investment, traffic picks up a bit in the summer and Shelley Roberts is selling kites and hammocks in Fenwick Island.

Roberts, who owns Fenwick Hammocks & Kites in the Village of Fenwick Island shopping center, has run her business there for 12 years now. Before that, Roberts owned The Feed Bag restaurant, which is now occupied by Charlie’s Bayside. And her parents, Marilyn and Marvin Levinson, own the shopping center.

Yes, she is indeed a constant in that corner of the world.

However, if there is another constant in this community, it is that there is always change. To illustrate that point, one only needs to look at the ever-morphing stock in Roberts’ store.

“Well, we started out just selling kites and hammocks,” explained Roberts. “But now we also sell a lot of toys and games for children. I mean, we still sell a lot of kites and hammocks, but we’re now really kid-friendly.”

Roberts enjoys working at the shopping center largely because of her years there. The Salisbury, Md. native explained that she has seen some of her former teen-aged employees return with their own children in tow, and she has had the pleasure of knowing many of the other shop owners for years. She also really enjoys the ever-changing stock in her shop.

“It’s a fun place, I get to do a lot of the buying myself,” said Roberts. “So, a lot of it depends on what I like, and I think we have a great selection for all ages.”

Kites adorn the ceiling of the small shop, and hammocks fill the patio outside, facing Route 1. A splash of color from a giant ball of rubber bands at the window seems to flow right into the theme of bright, loudly colorful items on the wall displays and center aisle.

It’s all about fun.

Sometimes a ball of rubber bands can chase the blues away.

“We really do try to have something for everyone,” said Roberts. “We have everything you could need from fun things for the beach to games and puzzles to get you through a rainy day.”

Fenwick Hammocks & Kites is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. To reach the shop by phone, call (302) 537-2201.
