'I love it'

Coastal Point • Darin J. McCann

A mural adorns a wall in the home of artist Jean Mayr, who owns It’s All An Art. Mayr is doing a few murals in homes now, and is interested in doing as many as she can. Below right, Mayr has created a following for her work with window frames.

If life indeed imitates art, then one could logically presume the opposite would also hold true. And, if art imitates life, one would have to assume that the work of artist Jean Mayr is enthusiastic and unique.

And that person would be correct.

“I love to paint,” said Mayr, enthusiastic even as she sat at her kitchen table. “I love thinking about the work, and doing the painting itself — and I just love hearing compliments on my paintings.”

Mayr is one of those artists who enjoys doing her work wherever she can. Her company, It’s All An Art, advertises on the brochure that she specializes in custom murals and paintings. Mayr sticks to that philosophy.

“I love painting scenery, especially the beach scenes,” said Mayr. “But I’ve done different things for people who wanted something else.” Pictured in her brochure are paintings of a golf course and a deer in the woods.

Mayr now spends a good part of her time at her condo in Ocean City, Md. She lives the rest of her time in Mt. Airy, Md. — but she hopes to come full-time to the beach soon. She has been married to her husband, Dave, for 22 years, and the couple has two children, Brad, 20, and Jena, 17.

“I love them at this age,” said Mayr, smiling when asked about her children. “We have a great relationship. I’m very lucky.”

Like many artists, Mayr said she likes to bounce from one project to the next — rarely completing one work from start-to-finish. Perhaps it’s the perfectionist in her, as she found something she didn’t like in what appeared to be a lovely painting.

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “I really need to do something with that boat.”

Local art collectors, however, have eaten up her work. Mayr has sold her work at Island Rattan in Fenwick Island, Fenwick Float-oars and the Berlin (Md.) fair. But much of her work comes directly from people calling her to order custom work for their walls or window frames.

Concerned about price? Oh, she has that covered ... for now.

“My husband gets on me sometimes and says I should charge more for my work,” said Mayr. “But I charge what I think is fair — and I like to see people buy my paintings.”
