James L. Smith, 75

James L. Smith of Dagsboro, and formerly of Potomac, Md., died July 10, 2006, at Harrison House in Georgetown. He was a retired deputy administrator for the Packers and Stockyards Administration of the USDA.

He served as a first lieutenant with the U.S. Army in the infantry in Korea.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Joan Sautter Smith; and two daughters, Nancy Smith and Margaret Clifton.

A mass of Christian Burial was to be held July 13, 2006, with internment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Dagsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association of Delaware, 321 East 11th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.



Thurman J. Bodley Jr., 82

Thurman J. Bodley Jr., 82, of Whaleyville, Md., died July 21, 2006, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. He was a retired district manager for Coca Cola.

He was a member of Masons, the Scottish Rite, the Valley of Salisbury and VFW Post 8276.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian A. Bodley; daughters Cheryl Gronback, Patricia Bodley, Toni Julian and Kimberly Judge; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thurman J. Bodley Sr. and Alma Cooper Bodley.

Funeral services were held graveside at Dale Cemetery, Whaleyville, Md.

Dorothy E. Mayo, 86

Dorothy E. Mayo, 86, of Lewes, died at her home. She was a retired secretary for the Franklin Mint.

She is survived by her son, Larry Mayo; a brother, Jack Frank; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Mayo. Private funeral services were held. Robert James Hudson Sr., 62

Robert James Hudson Sr., 62, of Lexingon Park, Md., died on July 21, 2006, at his home. He was a Civil Service employee for the Navy in the Fleet Support Team. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hudson; daughters Patty Andreoli and Robin Lynn Thomas; and his son, Robert James Hudson Jr.; seven grandchildren; mother, Hazel Hudson; sisters Rachel Pusey, Joann Mitchell and Jenny Lee Caudill; and brothers Vernon and Virgil Hudson. A memorial service was held on July 31, 2006, at Leonardtown Baptist Church.

Burton W. Toomey, Jr. 66

Burton W. Toomey, 66, of Millville, died on July 25, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center. He was a retired maintenance supervisor for Coastal Resort. He was a member of VFW Post 7234 Ocean View, and Dagsboro Post 24 American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Rosalie West Toomey, and son Burton W. Toomey. Services were held Aug. 2, 2006, at Watson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Worcester County Humane Society, PO Box 48, Berlin, MD 21811.



Marie E. Laws, 87

Marie E. Laws, 87, of Selbyville, Del., died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.

“Marie was a mother to many, every ethnicity. It was just natural to her to be a mother. She was the matriarch of the family. If you told her where some greens could be found, you became her friend,” family members said. She retired as a nursing assistant for the Stockley Center in Millsboro. She was a member of the Zoar United Methodist Church, Selbyville.

She is survived by her daughters, Gail Laws Obas and Venetia White; her brother, Charles Adkins; her sister; Madeline Wilson; her sister-in-Laws, Cordelia Tyre, Louise Adkins, Myrtis Adkins and Mary Ann Adkins; her grandchildren, Andrea Obas, Ebony Morris and Shanae Laws; her great-grandchildren, Miya, Arianna, Aliyah, Obrian and Reuben and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Edward Laws, who died in 2002.

Funeral services were scheduled for Friday, Aug. 11, at 11 a.m. at Zoar United Methodist Church, Route 17, Selbyville, where friends may call one hour earlier, with internment at Curtis Cemetery, Bishopville, Md.

Robert James Hudson Sr., 62

Robert James “Bob” Hudson Sr., 62, a resident for 10 years of Lexington Park and Mechanicsville, Md., died July 21, 2006.

Master Chief Robert Hudson joined the U.S. Navy in 1960, and served on active duty for 29 years. He served with honor and distinction in many commands. Among them were Naval Station Midway Island, the flight demonstration team Blue Angles in Pensacola, Fla., as well as an instructor in jungle survival school in Subic Bay, Philippines.

His greatest legacy came from his assignment to the National Parachute Test Range in El Centro (later relocated to the Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, Calif.) where as a Naval test parachutist he accumulated more than 1,000 parachute jumps during his 13-year tour. Hudson was the driving force behind testing and qualifying the NASA space shuttle escape system after the disaster to the Challenger space shuttle. For these efforts he was awarded the Air Medal.

Hudson began working as a civil service employee for the Navy in the Fleet Support Team in 1996 and established the quality assurance team. His heart was always close to parachutes and escape systems and he found himself supporting the E-2C Hawkeye PSE program. He retired from federal service in October of 2005 but continued to support the E-2C PSE program by working for K.R. Systems.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joyce; his daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Tony Andreoli, daughter Robin Lynn Thomas and son Robert James Hudson Jr.; his mother, Hazel Hudson; sisters Rachel Pusey, Joann Mitchell and Jenny Lee Caudill; and his brothers Vernon and Virgil Hudson; grandchildren Alyssa, Zachary, Anthony, Buddy, Lauren, Robert James III, Noel and Nicholas.

A memorial service to celebrate his everlasting life was scheduled for Monday, July 31, 2006, at Leonardtown Baptist Church.

Burton W. Toomey Jr., 66

Burton W. Toomey Jr., 66, of Millville, died Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.

Toomey retired in September 2005 as a maintenance supervisor for Coastal Resort. He was an Army veteran with two years of foreign service. He was a member of VFW Post 7234 Ocean View, and Dagsboro Post 24 American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and reading.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Rosalie West Toomey; his son, Burton W. Toomey III, and close friend Annette Hammond. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were scheduled for Aug. 2, 2006, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St. Millsboro, with internment at Dagsboro Redman’s Cemetery, Dagsboro, Delaware.

Susannah I. Butz, 87

Susannah I. Butz, 87, of Lewes, died on July 30, 2006, at home.

In Lewes, Butz enjoyed many classes at the Southern Delaware Academy of Lifelong Learning and was interested in a worldwide correspondence, bridge, literature, music, nature and painting.

During World War II, she was employed in a civil service public relations capacity at the Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, U.S. Navy, Cleveland, Ohio, and at the U.S. Army Air Force Intelligence School, Harrisburg, Pa.

She was city editor of the Maple Heights Press and a reporter for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, both in Ohio. As a volunteer, she provided public relations and publicity aid to parent-teacher associations, Girls Scouts of America, Red Cross blood collections, YMCA, garden clubs, AARP, Meals-on-Wheels, Pittsburg Symphony East, and Republican and church organizations.

The widow of George A. Butz, she is survived by a daughter, Ruth Ruggiero; son-in-law, Charles Ruggiero; son, Brian C. Butz; and grandchildren Charles and Sarah Ruggiero. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a son, Gerald, and a brother, James Rohm. Her cremated remains will be buried with a private graveside ceremony at an ancestral country churchyard in Washington County, Pa.

Anga Lee ‘Angie’ Brittingham, 64

Anga Lee “Angie” Brittingham, 64, of Dagsboro, formerly of Gaston, S.C., died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. She was a retail clerk serving in retail sales and grocery stores.

She loved to play cards, to read and to watch Westerns. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Swanska, S.C.

She is survived by her daughters, Donna Waugh and Carolyn Nelson, and her husband Dennis Brittingham Jr.; Joanne Dorey and her husband, the Rev. Charles C. Brittingham III; four brothers, John Stanley Hoover, Lewis Edward Hoover, Belton Hoover and Jack Hoover; one sister, Mary Ann Beard; eight grandchildren: Hoyt, Renee, John, Erin, Samantha, Hunter, Dennis and Ryan; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Brielle. She is also survived by her devoted dogs, Lacey and Mikey. She was preceded in death by her longtime companion, Gene B. Austin, in 2003.

Funeral services were scheduled for Aug. 8, 2006, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington Street, Millsboro with internment at Henlopen Memorial Park, Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.



Mary M. Joyner, 62

Mary M. Joyner, 62, of Millsboro, formerly of Baltimore, Md., died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, at home. She was a customer-service representative, having worked her life in the banking industry, and retired from Nationsbank after many years of service.

She was affiliated with St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Baltimore, Md.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Cooper and his wife Bonnie, and Patrick Marx and his wife Kathryn Elliot; two sisters, Frances Stilli and Michele Ashburn; four grandchildren, Cyndi, Sammie, Samantha and Olivia; and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 8, at St. Ursula Catholic Church in Baltimore, Md.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.



James R. Derickson, 77

James R. Derickson, 77, of Selbyville and Naples, Fla., died July 30, 2006, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md.

He retired from Dupont Company as a payroll supervisor. He was a member of St. Matthews-by-the-Sea United Methodist Church in Fenwick Island and North Naples United Methodist Church in Naples, Fla., and was a member of their choir. He was a member of the Ocean View and Fenwick Island yacht clubs and was a Korean War veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Elin; his son Jay and his wife Allison; and one granddaughter, Samantha Derickson.

A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, at noon at St. Matthews-by-the-Sea United Methodist Church, 1000 Coastal Highway, Fenwick Island.
