Fenwick Island splits on planning process
Council Member Chris Clark might have unexpectedly become the first appointed member of Fenwick Island’s new Planning Commission at the council’s recent reorganizational meeting, but town officials appear to want to take further decisions on the town’s long-overdue, state-mandated comprehensive plan at a decidedly slower pace.
Beebe location closing, looking to future
Another season of medical assistance in Millville has passed for Beebe Medical Center. The Millville location will close on Tuesday after three months of treating locals and visitors in the area for minor injuries, flu-like symptoms and broken bones.
Commissioners wait on Estuary decision
When asked, only two people raised their hands Thursday night in support. Some 33 people then confirmed their opposition to the plan to subdivide 742 acres into 1,060 lots off of Camp Barnes and Double Bridges roads, near the Assawoman Wildlife Refuge, for a proposed development called The Estuary.
Traffic issues a major concern with project
In a letter written by South Bethany residents Richard and Bonnie Kemske and addressed to Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission, the pair urged the county to deny approval of The Estuary subdivision partly because it will “overload the already crowded roads.”
Eight vie for four Bethany council seats
Bethany Beach will hold its annual election for town council members on Saturday, Sept. 9, from noon to 6 p.m. at town hall. There are four seats up for grabs, with four incumbents (Jerry Dorfman, Lew Killmer, Tony McClenny and Harry Steele) and four challengers (Charles Gravatte, Joseph Healy, Tracy Mulligan and Steve Wode) vying for them. Leading up to the elections, the Coastal Point asked each candidate to answer a series of questions to help voters make their choices before they head to the polls. Here are their answers, in alphabetical order ...
Fenwick gives neither inch nor mile
Members of the Fenwick Island Board of Adjustments (BoA) were quick to respond to concerns about setback variances with a statement of fact: In the last two years, only a single variance has been granted by the board.
Selbyville VFC jumps on Web wagon
In what has become a growing trend for towns, fire departments and other organizations locally and nationally, the Selbyville Volunteer Fire Company recently launched a seemingly all-inclusive Web site.

MMORPG
To many of you, this acronym has no meaning. But to some of us, it is a large form of entertainment. MMORPG stands for Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game. Basically a bunch of people from all over the world start up a game on their computers or game consoles and log into a whole new world. Some games are mild something along the lines of the Sims or SecondLife and some are fantasy-based, like World of Warcraft. I’ve never personally played any of the Sims games, but have recently ventured into playing World of Warcraft, and I’ve played a little bit in SecondLife. The virtual worlds created by such games is amazing. Especially in SecondLife, where the company that controls the game is ever expanding the world to meet the supply and demand needs of the users in game.

Soccer team set to rule the pitch
The 2006 Indian River boy’s varsity soccer team is loaded lock, stock and two smoking barrels this season. They return 14 players from last season’s 16-1-1 team including their leading scorer, Pierson Roenke and have settled into a solid game plan for advancing past the second round of the state tournament: keep control of possessions, work the ball and score.
Volleyball team aims to keep crown
Last fall season, the Indian River varsity volleyball team won the Southern Henlopen Conference in its inaugural year of existence, with an 11-7 record. This year’s team has done some shuffling around to make up for the losses of Sara Powell and Shauna Jacobs to graduation and possibly Kelly Jurusik in an attempt to defend their title and win it two years in a row.
IR hosts injury treatment seminar
Protective equipment and constant repetitions of proper sports techniques prepare many of the area athletes for the sports they play. But no matter how much they prepare, sports injuries can and do happen.
Croll takes her skills on the road
Brittany Croll, an Indian River alumnus and recent graduate of Franklin and Marshall, has been honored numerous times in her life by her peers for both academic and athletic achievements. She served as her class valedictorian in 2002, and made countless athletic and academic All-Star teams throughout her high school and college career, including being named as a Division III collegiate All-American selection.
