Commissioners approve Estuary
Despite overwhelming opposition, Sussex County’s Planning and Zoning Commissioners voted 4-1 Tuesday night to preliminarily approve The Estuary development. Representatives involved with the 1,052-lot project on more than 700 acres off of Camp Barnes and Double Bridges Roads, near the Assawoman Wildlife Refuge, said Tuesday that they plan to present the commission with preliminary site plans in about two months.

Local road project loses federal funds
Because of a loss of up to $10 million in expected federal funds, the Delaware Department of Transportation might have to scale back the “local roads” portion of the much-anticipated Route 26 project, DelDOT spokesman Darrel Cole told the Coastal Point this week.

Ill-fated boat may have struck whale
A 35-foot humpback whale that washed up dead on the New Jersey shore Sept. 28 might have been the black object the ill-fated fishing boat The Chief hit before sinking and leaving its seven-man crew stranded in the Atlantic Ocean for two days.

Dredging begins
Six members from the Sussex Conservation District broke ground on the Assawoman Canal dredging Tuesday, Oct. 3. On the Route 26 bridge, behind CSI Granite & Marble, the team took out their first scoops of soil from the canal.

South Bethany officials gave the preliminary go-ahead for the proposed York Road pedestrian walkway project on a 6-0 vote at their Sept. 28 special meeting/workshop.

Phillips questions buffer regulations
Buffers were again a major topic of conversation on Tuesday when Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) officials presented their latest Pollution Control Strategy to Sussex County Council. But this time, it was for a different reason.

It has been three weeks since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a recall on fresh spinach, and it can now be found once again filtering into local grocery stores.

Dagsboro police officer resigns
Officer Larry Harris formally resigned from the Dagsboro Police Department on Saturday, Sept. 30, after seven and a half years of service. Harris said he could not comment on why he left, but said he was leaving a great town and place to work. “I love the people,” he said.

Estauary gets approval from county P&Z
More than a month after 33 people declared their opposition to The Estuary at an Aug. 17 public hearing, Sussex County’s planning and zoning commissioners voted 4-1 on Sept. 28 to approve the subdivision of 737 acres into 1,052 lots for the development off of Double Bridges and Camp Barnes Roads, near the Assawoman Wildlife Refuge.

Chamber golf outing popular at Bayside
The Bethany Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce will hold its Annual Fall Golf Outing next Thursday, Oct. 12, but spots are already limited in the popular event. Chamber officials said late last week that only six foursomes were remaining for the tournament, which will take place at Bayside Golf Course on Route 54 in Selbyville for the second year in a row.

Women of the Word (WOW) gathered in the sanctuary of the Peninsula Community Church in Selbyville for their second women-focused Bible-study class on Thursday morning, Sept. 21.

But they fell instead, 3-2, for their first loss of the season.

Volleyballers go 2-1 on week
With wins over Red Lion Christian Academy and St. Thomas More, Indian River volleyball moved up to 6-2. Hard-hitting kills from Renee Davidson and Haley Brennan and strong defensive blocks from Nyssa Altman, Hilary Hawkins, Davidson and Brennan proved to be the right antidote to move the girls ahead.
