The Indian River School Board voted April 17 to amend the School Choice Program regarding Southern Delaware School of the Arts (policy JECC-A).

Selbyville police arrested four people on Monday, April 9, in two drug-related incidents.

Selbyville restaurateurs will be reexamining the way they serve alcohol. The Town Council voted unanimously April 2 to pass a Zoning Code amendment, Chapter 200, which serves several purposes: to define bar, restaurant, nightclub and cocktail lounge; to limit the hours each day during which alcoholic beverages may be sold; to prohibit stand-up consumption of alcoholic beverages; to create a licensing process for restaurants; to allow existing restaurants an exception for noncompliance; and provide for the enforcement of these rules.

The Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission voted this week to approve a final subdivision plan application by Mandarin Homes for Water’s Run subdivision, north of Route 54 and south of Dirickson Creek.

Last year, Selbyville Police Chief W. Scott Collins rappelled down the side of a 17-story building to support Special Olympics Delaware. This year, Collins was nominated for another tall challenge: he is the new vice-chairman for Delaware Law Enforcement for Special Olympics (LESO) executive committee.

The Inland Bays Foundation is up and running and ready to recruit members. They had their first official meeting as an established 501(c)3 organization in October 2011 and have a mission “to advocate and promote the restoration of the Inland Bays watershed by conducting public outreach and education, tracking restoration efforts, encouraging scientific inquiry and sponsoring needed research, in order to establish a long-term process for the protection and enhancement of the Inland Bays.”

Whether one is driving over the new Indian River Inlet Bridge, attending Delaware Tech, visiting the Veterans Home in Milford or kayaking the Assawoman Canal, it is hard not to feel the impact of state Sen. George H. Bunting and his 28 years in public office. Bunting’s tenure will come to an end this November, though, as he is not seeking re-election. And while these accomplishments are just the tip of the iceberg of his time in office, Bunting is particularly proud of them and the collaboration that turned them into reality.

Selbyville is only a few signatures away from state funding that will revamp the town’s water supply. Town officials met this week with Delaware Division of Public Health officials to sign the last of papers that would grant them $1.4 million from the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program to build two new wells, on Cemetery Road and Railroad Avenue.

For months, Councilman Frank Smith III has made the same comment at Selbyville Town Council meetings: there’s a layer of scum on the wastewater at the Church Street pump station.

The Selbyville Planning & Zoning Commission voted this week to recommend that the Town Council approve a request for a farmers’ market to be held at the corner of Route 17 and Williams Street in Selbyville.

Berlin, Md., resident Jeannie Mariner had approached the council Jan. 9 for permission to host a weekly farmers’ market at the lot her family owns in Selbyville.

After years of construction, delay and turbulent waters, the Indian River Inlet Bridge opened to traffic last Friday, with Gov. Jack Markell taking the maiden ride across its span.

Looking to join many of the area’s towns, Selbyville is now considering a farmers’ market of its own. Jeannie Mariner of Berlin, Md., requested to use her family-owned property at the corner of Route 17 and Williams Street as a farmers’ market.

In an effort to move the Route 54 Improvement Project toward completion, the Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announced Thursday, Jan. 5, that contractor Mumford & Miller, will be doing paving operations this weekend.  Unseasonably warm weather will allow a portion of the project to be paved now instead of in the spring, officials said. 
 

Delaware State Police and officers from the Ocean View Police Department this week arrested two Ocean View-area residents in connection with a string of armed robberies at businesses throughout the area.

Maryland Route 610, southwest of Selbyville, was closed for several hours on Tuesday, Jan. 3, when a tour bus rear-ended a car. Maryland State Police said they responded to the call at 4:05 p.m. and found the incident on Route 610 east of Peerless Road, which is 2.5 miles west of Route 113.

Employees of local businesses are being encouraged to check currency after counterfeit money was passed to Selbyville businesses in December of 2011. Four counterfeit $20 bills and one counterfeit $50 bill were found at McDonald’s, Family Dollar and Dollar General during the busy holiday season, beginning Dec. 11, 2011.

An isolated robbery at Fox’s Pizza Den in Millville has snowballed into a string of robberies as Holt’s Liquors and Pomeroy’s, Inc., were hit within the last week.
